Long time ago when we were young And knew the universe was one Beneath the moon and stars and sun We always stuck together babe Whatever kind of weather babe We went on forever babe And all the subways in your mind Lead us to a certain space in time And when we get there you will find It's nothing like a thing you read It ain't like the Bible said The revolution's in your head Baby you're saved And everything we took as true Was just another point of view And life is round and earth is blue Pleasure's pain and dark is light Loss is gain and black is white And everything's gonna be alright But all you wanna do round here Is stuff your face and spill your beer Hit Grand Parade and score your gear And pray you're dead within a year Baby you're saved Baby you're saved Twisted and crazed Spun out and dazed Badly behaved Vile and depraved But no longer enslaved To the things that you crave Out your head in a cave Or dead at a rave Or riding the crest Of your own little wave With no need to shave To wash or to bathe Cause you call yourself Dave And you live like a brave With all the things we forget And the things we forgave And the trails that we blazed On the way to the grave Baby you're saved Baby you're saved Baby you're saved

I knew a man called Bob bob bob Who killed himself behind the walls Of boarding houses cold and grey In slums across the USA I owed him four pound fifty For a David Bowie LP And I use to think that maybe He was just a little crazier than me They found him there behind the door Where luck had run out long before He curled up in the corner With a photo of his family A whiskey bottle empty And some stuff that made his face go green The broken leaves from all his books He’d bundled up and wrapped in polythene Come on children, gather round Can’t you hear the famous sound Of everybody crying in the night Come on children, don’t be long Come and sing your famous song Ten thousand people dead Because they don’t know how To face the morning light

When we hit the road we’ll be on our way We’ll be on our way When the sun explodes and the love light grows You know we’ll be ok We wander through the city Forever flying so high It’s a celebration Of my generation And we feel like this and we feel like that And we don’t know what we’re looking at Baby understand that the promised land Is just a mile away There’ll be hills to climb, there’ll be strength to find But it’s a new day And there’s a life around the corner Better than the one that you know It feels like creation And my generation And we run around and we have our fun And we make a mess of everyone And if you don’t make it Then I won’t too Cause I just couldn’t take it Without you So if you kill yourself please send me a note I’ll read it in my new pine overcoat

Poor old Jessie Poor old Jessie Sitting naked in the corner over there Trying to find the real you I’m the tax collector Just give me my due Yeah that’s me in the uniform Looking like a swanky swank Or one of the girls from Barclays bank Poor old Jessie You silly old Bessie Poor old Jessie This geezer stands and watches me Muttering about I don’t know what Like a leaping laughing lunatic I’ll pay fare to somewhere And you think I won’t get far But at least I’ll get to Mexico And land me a fight with a bull headed matador And the night will flutter on Poor old Jessie Poor old Jessie Poor old Jessie They told you only children lie And you believed them and so did I Outside the war is nearly over Everybody runs back in their houses Better get the kids to school And ready your jackboots babe For a grind with man and beast I saw you walking down the street one time And I knew you were shopping for compliments But you won’t get one from me

We don’t need no violent revolution So drop the gun – we gotta live as one Won’t achieve a thing with persecution Live as one – follow the sun You know we’re all in this thing together Like it or not – you better give it a shot – it’s now or never It’s the game of life – interdependent so You gotta roll with the punches gotta go with the flow You gotta push your little psyche into another dimension Cause divine intervention ain’t no human invention The seeds you sow – better let them grow If you seed the field then you’ll be the reaper And it really doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor Cause no class hate’s a-gonna win your war See it’s not about money it’s not about drugs It’s not about envy it’s all about love Love is the teacher – love is the key Love is within you love is without you Take it or leave it the choice is yours Believe it the bodies are falling about you So let me be your brother Let me be your friend Let me fight beside you Till the very end I tell you genocidal tendencies are silly to extreme After all you’re still quite small – you dunno where you’ve been You was only swearing yesterday – now you wanna win the world away But you haven’t got anything left to say

about

Pete's Sleeve Notes

1. Baby We’re Saved – great rock’n’roll song. Slightly woody vocal sound.

2. Bob Bob Bob – v good. Tiny odd/quirky strummy bit in middle – had to edit out a mistake.

3. New Pine Overcoat – v good. Reverb quite noticeable. Not sure if too much. But maybe sounds like being in a mortuary?

4. Poor Old Jessie – very good.

5. Take It or Leave It – very good.

Recorded in one take at Rosehill Terrace, Brighton, England, in autumn 1997
